Already battling record-low approval ratings, South Korea’s President Yoon Suk-yeol has landed in trouble again after his disparaging remarks about key ally the United States were caught on a hot mic.

이미 사상 최저의 지지율과 싸우고 있는, 한국의 윤석열 대통령은 핵심 동맹국인에 미국에 대한 비하 발언이 핫 마이크(마이크가 켜진지 모르고 말을 하다 노출됨)에 걸린 후 다시 곤경에 빠졌다.

 

 

Yoon, a political novice who took office in May, is in New York for the United Nations General Assembly and chatted on Wednesday with Joe Biden during a photo op at the Global Fund where the US President had just pledged $6 billion.

지난 5월 취임한 정치 초년생인 윤 대통령은 유엔총회 참석차 뉴욕을 방문중이며, 지난 수요일에 미국 대통령이 60억 달러를 약속했던 글로벌 펀드 모금 행사에서 사진 촬영을 하는 동안 조 바이든 대통령과 담소를 나눴다.

Yoon was caught saying to his aides afterwards in footage that went viral in South Korea.

윤 대통령은 이후 한국에서 급속도로 퍼진 영상에서 자신의 측근들에게 이런 말을 하는 것이 포착됐다.

 

 

A YouTube video of Yoon’s comments racked up over two million views just hours after it was posted, and “fuckers” became the number one trending topic on Twitter in South Korea on Thursday.

윤 대통령의 발언이 담긴 유튜브 동영상은 게시된 지 몇 시간 만에 200만 뷰가 넘는 조회수를 달성했고, 목요일 한국 트위터상에서 "새끼들(fuckers)" 이 현재 유행하는 화제 1위를 차지했다.

 

 

“The president’s words and actions are the national dignities of the country,” one YouTube commenter wrote.

Yoon’s crude comments appear to refer to Biden’s drive to increase US funding to the Global Fund, which would require congressional approval.

At one point, his approval rating dropped to 24 percent, although it has since inched up to 32 percent.

His predecessor, Moon Jae-in, enjoyed approval ratings of about 70 percent at the same stage in his term, polling data showed, and Yoon started work with 52 percent of people polled thinking he was doing a good job.

Yoon’s critics were swift to seize on his latest alleged gaffe.

Yoon’s “foul language tarnishing the US Congress caused a major diplomatic mishap,” said Park Hong-keun, floor leader of the opposition Democratic Party.

야당인 민주당 박홍근 원내대표는 윤 대통령의 "미 의회를 더럽히는 막말이 큰 외교적 불상사를 초래했다"고 말했다.

 

 

Yoon’s office told AFP it had no comment on the incident.
